The synthetic biology competition focuses on the innovation and application of synthetic biology. It mainly includes: Synbio Challenges and Synbio Hive, which also includes Enterprise Challenges, Synbio Hive-Enterprise Challenge.
The Synthetic Biology Specialized Committee of the Chinese Society of Biotechnology (hereinafter referred to as the “special committee”) will act as the instructor of the synthetic biology competition and host the Synbio Challenges.
The Synbio Challenges will be composed of five units—Faculty of Synthetic Biology，SIAT(in preparation) , Institute of Synthetic Biology, SIAT, Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Association for Synthetic Biology，and DeepTech.
The Synbio Hive (including corporate challenges) will be hosted by DeepTech under the guidance of the special committee and co-organized by Shenzhen Association for Synthetic Biology to provide support for the overall organization and execution of the competition.
1. Background
Synthetic biology is an emerging frontier interdisciplinary and typical convergence technology in the field of life sciences. It designs and synthesizes new or transforms natural life systems, reveals the laws of life, and builds a new generation of engineered biological systems by fusing engineering science concepts with life science principles and multi-disciplinary enabling technologies; it is hailed as “the key to understanding life.” (Creation for knowledge), disruptive technology to change the future (Creation for use).
In the past 20 years, systems biology and genomics have gained a large amount of knowledge accumulation. With the emergence and maturity of DNA sequencing and synthesis technology, machine learning to process biological big data, gene editing tools, and biological foundry factory platforms, it has greatly promoted the development of synthetic biology. develop. The genetic realization of toggle switches and oscillators in living cells, the synthesis and function display of virus, bacteria, and yeast genomes, and the expansion of codons are examples of creating knowledge. The large-scale synthesis of natural products such as artemisinin and opioid compounds and bio-based chemical raw materials, as well as mRNA vaccines, synthetic foods, etc. demonstrate the energy of future engineering biology and biotechnology. Synthetic biology will make important contributions to human medical health, food security, green production, energy security, environmental security, and biological security.
The scientific charm and huge application prospects of synthetic biology drive major countries in the world to propose development roadmaps and set up research projects; the rapid increase in financing has spawned a large number of start-ups; scientific talents and industrial development are simultaneously developed. In China, synthetic biology has formed research centers and industrial clusters in Shenzhen, Tianjin, Shanghai and other places, and has begun to spread to a wider area. Chinese students have performed well in international synthetic biology competitions and are a new force in synthetic biology in the future. China has become an important force in the field of international synthetic biology.
2. Introduction to Synthetic Biology Competition
The synthetic biology competition focuses on the innovation and application of synthetic biology, and is committed to opening up the production, learning, research, innovation, and investment channels in the field of synthetic biology in China, converging students and researchers in the field of biology, connecting universities, enterprises, capital, The government, parks, media, databases and other upstream and downstream participants in the entire chain have truly formed the ecological closed loop of China’s synthetic biology innovation landing, allowing innovative ideas in the field of synthetic biology to have landing support while driving source innovation with industrial demand.
Synbio Challenges
The innovation competition is mainly for current university students and postgraduate students. This year’s innovation competition includes seven fields of medicine, agriculture, environment, manufacturing, information, basic research, and innovative applications. Students are encouraged to explore the innovation and application of synthetic biology in different fields based on their interests. The first innovation competition is expected to be held in Shenzhen in April 2022.
Synbio Hive
The Entrepreneurship Competition is geared to eight more mature synthetic biology projects (such as participating in previous iGEM projects, Ph.D., post-doctorate, Scientific research personnel’s projects), taking its research maturity, landing commercialization potential, large-scale application potential and other factors as the main judging dimensions, and tapping the changes that these projects may bring to the industry and the world.
Synbio Hive-Enterprise Challenge
The Corporate Challenge, which falls within the scope of the Synthetic Biology Entrepreneurship Competition, is a specially set part of this competition. The industry will draw up the competition questions and set up a corresponding reward mechanism. The participating teams will choose their intended competition questions according to the matching degree of their research directions to participate in the competition. Teams that sign up for the entrepreneurial competition must choose at least one corporate challenge to participate; teams that sign up for the innovation competition can choose to participate in the corporate challenge. At present, the food track and energy track questions have been released.
3. Competition expert judges
With the support of domestic top scientific research institutes, venture capital, enterprises, media and other parties, the number of expert judges confirmed in the competition has increased to 47.
