The Faculty of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences/Institute of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences plans to jointly hold the “Fifth Synthetic Biology Youth Summer Camp” from July 12 to July 16, 2021 (abbreviated as iSynBio YSC 5.0). Synthetic biology is the frontier field of life sciences and a disruptive technology that will change the future. This event aims to promote interaction and exchanges among outstanding college students, learn and understand the frontier fields of life sciences, especially the development of synthetic biology, stimulate scientific interest, and make reasonable plans for future learning.
Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences, is an independent public research university established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, relying on the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has been included in the mid-term adjustment list of the 13th Five-Year Plan for Guangdong Province and become an important part of the Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Science and Technology Innovation Center and the Comprehensive National Science Center.
The Faculty of Synthetic Biology is one of the first six colleges established by the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences. The college currently has two departments, one center and ten characteristic teaching platforms. Among them, the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Engineering Biology provide biological sciences and synthetic biology’s basic theory and experimental skills learning respectively. The Center for Frontier Cross-Synthetic Biology will create mechanisms to explore cooperation with Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences and related institutions of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences and other related institutions to create a cross-professional and cross-field platform to promote the development of cross-cutting frontier science and technology. At the same time, the institute has set up quantitative synthetic biology, genome engineering, cell engineering, microbial synthetic biology, molecular virology, synthetic immunology, synthetic organ engineering, material synthetic biological engineering, information synthetic biology, automation and intelligent biotechnology, etc. ten characteristic teaching platforms.
The Institute of Synthetic Biology is one of the eight research institutes of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences. Through the establishment of an open and cross-cooperative platform, the Institute has gathered young backbones in the field of synthetic biology at home and abroad and leading scientists at home and abroad to create a multidisciplinary team of more than 800 young people, mainly returned scientists, plus the first in China scientific facility for synthetic biology under construction has become the world’s largest synthetic biology research base.
The Faculty of Synthetic Biology (abbreviated as the college) and the Institute of Synthetic Biology (abbreviated as the Institute) adopt the development policy of “deep integration and work together as one ” of the college and the institute (abbreviated as the institute), based on biological sciences. With the characteristics of cross-science, relying on world-class scientific research platforms such as major scientific and technological facilities of synthetic biology and international talent highlands, it is committed to building the Institute of Synthetic Biology into a scientific and cultural heritage base and a national life science cross-science high-quality reserve talent training center, the internationally renowned synthetic biology research center and the achievement spillover center.
The institute has a group of leading figures in synthetic biology (full-time and part-time) at home and abroad, including many academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, academicians of the German Academy of Sciences, academicians of the American Academy of Medicine and Biological Engineering, lecture professors of the University of Hong Kong, etc., as well as the famous American synthetic biology Learning experts.
More than 50% of the backbone of the team belong to the four young talents, from Harvard University, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, New York University, University of California and other famous universities, with backgrounds spanning biology and physics. , Chemistry, Information and other disciplines.
In the past three years, the institute has published more than 200 papers in international core journals, including top journals such as Nature, Nature Microbiology, Nature Physics, ACS Synthetic Biology, Cell Research, etc.; it has produced 92 patents, including 23 international patents (PCT). A large number of achievements have been made in the direction of biological functional molecule synthesis and evolution, gene circuit design principles, yeast chromosome synthesis, natural product synthesis, microbial composition, and synthetic biosensing.
It is planned to recruit 50 campers. Undergraduate students (graduating students in Class of 2022) in biology, chemistry, medicine, computer science, physics, mathematics and other related or similar majors are welcome to sign up! Students who intend to go to colleges and research institutes by recommending exemptions, and those who have a strong interest in synthetic biology and have participated in the International Genetic Engineering Machine Competition (iGEM) are preferred.
Summer camp students will be given priority consideration for admission as a 2022 recommended exemption graduate student (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences-Chinese Academy of Sciences Deep Science and Technology Joint Training Program). Students who have qualifications for exemption or intend to obtain exemption qualifications can sign up for the summer camp exemption retest.
