Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen Municipal Government are in the process of establishing a new university in Shenzhen, named Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT). SIAT aims at building a science and technology based, scientific leading, world-class research university. The new university is located in Shenzhen, a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with growing high-tech industries.
"The world’s first Faculty of Synthetic Biology is here!"
Synthetic Biology redesigns the existing or creates novo biological systems, exploring the mechanism and rules of life, and developing next-generation biotechnology. The faculty is featured with interdisciplinary teaching and based on state-of-the-art scientific and research platforms including a unique synthetic biology facility and international talent pool. It is dedicated to becoming a center of scientific and cultural heritage, talent training and, worldly renowned synthetic biology and engineering biology.
"The world’s first Faculty of Synthetic Biology is recruiting now!"
SIAT has several research institutions that specialize in advanced technologies including synthetic biology, biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, materials science and engineering, as well as artificial intelligence and computer science. SIAT invites applicants for faculty and department chair positions available from its newly established Faculty of Synthetic Biology.
The Faculty of Synthetic Biology (FSB) at SIAT has been proposed to set up three departments, including Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Engineering Biology, and Center for Advanced Interdisciplinary Synthetic Biology Research.
The Department of Biological Sciencesmainly includes quantitative synthetic biology, information synthetic biology, microbial synthetic biology and other professional disciplines. The Department aims to cultivate innovative talents in biological sciences with mathematical, physical and chemical skills, international vision and scientific thinking ability by extensive training from classroom to laboratory.
The Department of Engineering biology utilizes the knowledge from molecular understanding of natural life systems, and the engineering principles to design, build, test, and also learn from, artificial life systems, for advanced therapies, advanced materials, green manufacturing processes for chemicals, and advanced storage solutions for information.
The Center for Advanced Interdisciplinary Synthetic Biology Research focuses on the key scientific and technical issues of artificial life design, such as the fundamental design principles, synthetic construction capabilities and engineering technology platforms of synthetic biology. By integrating computational biology, quantitative biology, systems biology, with the methodology of mathematics, physics, information and engineering, to study the quantitative laws behind biological systems across scales, and adopt engineering concepts to design, improve and even create a new life, in order to meet the advanced need of human health.
