Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT) was established in 2006 and has produced a large number of original results which have academic influence and promote industrial technological innovation in biomedical engineering, brain science, synthetic biology, biomedicine, advanced electronic materials, robotics, artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and new energy. SIAT has 408 postgraduate tutors, 85% of whom have overseas experience, and a total of more than 8,000 postgraduates have been trained. In 2018, the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Science signed a cooperative education agreement. The two parties will rely on Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Science to jointly build Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Science (tentative name, English name SIAT). Facing the needs of future industries for technology and talents, the school focuses on setting up majors around emerging frontier interdisciplinary disciplines such as artificial intelligence, information technology, life and health, new energy, new materials, and forming a discipline system with science, engineering, medicine, and management as the main disciplines. SIAT is committed to becoming a world-class research university.
The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was founded in 2004. It is the first Sino-foreign cooperative university in China to introduce world-class teaching resources, independent legal personality and independent campus. It is one of the international campuses of the University of Nottingham in the UK. The University of Nottingham Ningbo China has three schools: the School of Business, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Technology. The university currently has about 8,000 students, of which more than 7% are from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and 60 countries and regions. Up to now, more than 18,000 graduates from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China have entered the world. More than 31% of the graduates who continue to study are admitted to the top ten universities in the world, such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Stanford, and more than 75% of the graduates who choose to work have entered the world’s top 500 companies, well-known Chinese and foreign companies or institutions. The University of Nottingham Ningbo China was approved by the Ministry of Education to conduct doctoral education in December 2008. There are currently 611 registered doctoral students and 232 doctoral students graduated successfully.
In order to cultivate high-level talents with an international perspective and close integration of industry, academia and research, strengthen scientific research cooperation between the two parties, and use the existing academic advantages, resources and facilities of both parties to achieve complementary advantages in talent training, in September 2020 ,an agreement through friendly consultations between UNNC and SIAT was reached this month and it was decided to launch a joint doctoral student program (DTP). The two parties will develop an innovative doctoral training system in multiple fields and cultivate high-level doctoral talents with an international perspective.
The first batch of joint Ph.D. admissions for the spring semester of 2021 has been successfully concluded. The University of Nottingham Ningbo has finally admitted 4 joint Ph.Ds, and the tuition fee will be reduced for three years. The students will be enrolled in February 2021.
After consulting with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, the recruitment of the Ph.D. co-training program for the fall semester of 2021 is now launched. Outstanding students are welcome to apply!
The University of Nottingham Ningbo China will waive the 3-year (36 months) tuition for the joint training of doctoral students (tuition fee is 110,000 RMB/year). SIAT will provide stipends, board and lodging allowances and other allowance support for doctoral students during their studies. The admitted doctoral students will be able to enjoy the relevant treatments of the University of Nottingham Ningbo and SIAT doctoral students at the same time.
The doctoral students of this project will be registered at the University of Nottingham Ningbo and their student status will be awarded with a doctorate degree from the University of Nottingham Ningbo. The enrollment index for the fall of 2021 is 10, and the enrollment time is September 2021.
The admission requirements and English proficiency of applicants for joint training doctoral students must meet the policies and regulations of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. Please refer to the school website for details:
1. Study mode: The course study for joint training of doctoral students is held at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, and the course study is taught in English. The mentor team decides on the student’s project arrangement before the start of this project. In principle, students will study at the University of Nottingham Ningbo for half of the entire project and the other half of the time at SIAT. Students who complete the study requirements stipulated in the training program and meet the graduation and degree-granting requirements will eventually obtain a degree from the University of Nottingham.
2. Mentor team: The doctoral student training supervisor team of this project can have two modes: 1) At least two UNNC supervisors, one SIAT supervisor and one qualified Nottingham University annual review expert; 2) At least one UNNC supervisor, a tutor at the University of Nottingham and a SIAT tutor.
3. Scientific research guarantee: the admitted doctoral students will be able to enjoy the dual high-quality teachers, advanced scientific research equipment and related treatments of the University of Nottingham Ningbo and SIAT.
1. Applicants contact the instructor of the SIAT joint training program and obtain the instructor’s consent to accept it. For the information of the instructor, please see “Appendix 1: Information on Cooperative Mentors of the UNNC-SIAT Doctoral Joint Training Program in 2021”;
2. After the tutor agrees, the applicant fills in the registration form (Appendix 2), and submits the registration form to the contact person of the tutor’s college/institute for the forecast name. The forecast name ends on April 1st;
3. Evaluation and review within the organization of each department, and after the forecast name is passed, the best recommendation will be recommended to the Education Office;
4. The recommended students should complete the online application of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China by 16:00 on May 15 (complete application materials are required, but English scores may not be available temporarily). 5. The mentors of both parties will interview the candidates before June 15;
6. The University of Nottingham Ningbo China will finally announce the admission results around July 15.
