Synthetic biology is an emerging frontier interdisciplinary science and typical convergence technology. By integrating modern life science principles, engineering science concepts and artificial intelligence and other multidisciplinary enabling technologies, it designs and transforms natural biological systems, or designs and synthesizes new biological systems from scratch, becoming the “key to understanding life” (Build to learn), the disruptive technology to change the future (Build to use).
“Build to learn” provides a new research paradigm for understanding the essence of life. The genetic realization of gene switches and oscillators, the artificial synthesis of chromosomes and the creation of primary biological systems, the expansion and function presentation of genetic codes, and the precise description and regulation of the behavior of biological groups by mathematical models are classics for understanding and even regulating the laws of life.
“Build to use” shows the great potential of engineering biology. It enables technological progress through gene network editing and new object design, guides the iterative upgrade of biotechnology, drives the future development of bio-economy, and responds to human health, food security, and the environment. Provide scientific solutions to the challenges faced by ecological security, energy and resource security.
The Faculty of Synthetic Biology is deeply integrated with the Institute of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institute of Adavanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
